What are backlinks?
Only the greatest invention since sliced bread! Seriously a backlink is a link from one website to another. Sounds quite simple yes? Well backlinks according to Matt Cutts (Google Chief Webmaster) are the most important part of google's ranking algorithm.If you google "dog training" there are about 33,500,000 results. Content is important but every website in the top 50 has great unique content about dog training. Google decides what website should be in the top 10 by voting. Consider each backlink to a website as a vote. So the website in number 1 position simply has the most votes, its that easy!
Not all votes are equal
Well its not quite that simple as not all votes are equal. If you have 100 backlinks from one website, that's not worth as much as 100 backlinks from 100 different websites. No one knows how important PageRank is but we all know that the higher the PageRank the more important the vote. Finally a very important part is the anchor text of the backlink.
